Poerner GmbH to build bitumen rig at Baku Oil Refinery

The German company Poerner GmbH will soon begin work on the basic design of the construction of a new bitumen rig at the Baku Oil Refinery named after Heydar Aliyev, said the message of SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) published Sept.16 on its website.

The work on the organization of Poerner’s operation at the refinery has already started and negotiations on the contract held, according to the message.

“Following the negotiations, a meeting was held with representatives of SOCAR, Oil Refinery named after Heydar Aliyev, Fluor and Poerner companies,” said the message. “The German company will begin the basic design of construction of the rig in the near future.”

Construction of the new bitumen rig with capacity of 400,000 tons per year is envisaged within the framework of modernization and reconstruction of the refinery named after Heydar Aliyev.

“As a result of the work, all types of fuel produced at the refinery will meet the Euro-5 standard, and the Azerkimya production association will be provided with high quality raw materials (fraction of ethane-ethylene, propane-propylene and butane-butylene),” said the message.

The head of SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) Rovnag Abdullayev said earlier that the process of modernization of the Baku Oil Refinery named after Heydar Aliyev will be completed by late 2018.

After the completion of the reconstruction, the processing capacity of the refinery will increase from 6 million to 7.5 million tons of oil per year.

The modernization cost is estimated at $1 billion.

SOCAR announced about liquidation of Azneftyag oil refinery on January 1, 2015 and its merger with Baku Oil Refinery named after Heydar Aliyev as part of work on improving and optimization of SOCAR’s structure.

In total, over 5.31 million tons of petroleum products were produced in Azerbaijan in 2014, compared to 5.09 million tons in 2013.
