$1.2B Ghorashal-Polash Urea Fertiliser mega-project in Bangladesh
Construction of Ghorashal-Polash Urea Fertiliser Factory will begin in Palash upzila in Narsingdi Distruct. All preparations have already been taken to build the country’s largest granular urea factory. The initiative is to construct a single factory with technical support from Japan, and to close the existing Ghorashal Urea Fertilizer Factory and Polash Urea Fertilizer Factory. The project will be using environment-friendly green technology and maintain the highest standards of operation.
At daily production of 2,800 metric tons, the new factory production will greatly exceed the combined output of the two existing dilapated plants, which are no longer viable environmentally or economically. The new fertilizer factory will dwarf the current biggest in Bangladesh, the Shahjalal Fertilizer Factory in Fenchuganj of Sylhet.
According to the parliamentary standing committee on industries, "Ghorashal Polash Urea Fertiliser Project" is to be implemented by June 2022 by Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) under the Ministry of Industries. Relevant government ministries will ensure uninterrupted power and gas supply.
Per BCIC, the new urea fertilizer factory is aimed at meeting the growing demand of fertilizer to ensure food security in the country, side by side with ensuring smooth supply of fertilizer to the farmers at an affordable cost, eliminating the need to import urea fertilizer, and to generate more local employment opportunities. Many of the current staffers at Ghorashal or Polash would get vacant posts within BCIC, or work on the new mega-project.
Earlier, the government signed an agreement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited and China National Chemical Engineering No-7 Construction Company Ltd to construct the Ghorashal-Polash Urea Fertilizer Factory. BCIC has already completed the preliminary works, including construction of on-site roads.
