Australia’s Geelong refinery in jeopardy of permanent closure in the face of pandemic restrictions
The long running 120,000 bpd Geelong refinery in Victoria is under consideration for a full shutdown as COVID-19 demand reductions and mandated restrictions have continued to pressure its operations. This refinery has been running at reduced rates through unit shutdowns since April to reduce its surplus production.
Viva Energy’s CEO Scott Wyatt recently stated that the stage three and four lockdowns for Victoria have made operations increasingly more difficult, and that the difficulties in these restrictions did not seem “realistic or achievable”.
To reopen the complex, Viva would have to reduce COVID-19 cases to five per day for a two week stretch, which Viva has called “high hurdles.” If these restrictions were to be reduced, Viva stated that it could possibly return to full production by November instead of closure.
