Australia’s upcoming Port Kembla LNG import terminal gains expansion approval.
Australian Industrial Energy’s Port Kembla LNG import terminal has had its expansion request approved by the Government of New South Wales. This revised terminal has an approximated capacity to import 100 petajoules of gas annually, which is about 75% of the expected needs for the New South Wales market. This project modification includes increasing volumes from LNG cargo ships that can deliver to the terminal, along with the terminal’s increased output.
Despite the ongoing crisis and the possibility of more gas coming from Queensland, this expansion approval will allow the project to bring in additional gas during winter seasons. Australia could see winter shortages in current supply by 2024 due to the anticipated decline of fields in the Bass Strait.
The Port Kembla LNG import project has an estimated cost of $159 million dollars and could make its final investment decision by the end of this year, and an eye on commercial startup in 2022.
