Bechtel chosen for Pluto LNG train 2 FEED by Woodside

Bechtel has cemented the inside running to build a second LNG production train at Woodside Petroleum’s Pluto plant in the Pilbara.

Woodside today said it had contracted Bechtel to do the design work for the 5 million tonnes per annum train, proposed as part of development of the $US b11 billion Scarborough gas project off the North West.

The oil and gas producer said the front-end engineering and design award includes an option to progress to a lump sum engineering, procurement and construction contract. Bechtel was named in October as preferred contractor for the project.

The privately-owned company built the two-train Wheatstone LNG project in which Woodside holds a minority stake, as well as six trains in Queensland.

Woodside is targeting a final investment decision in 2020 for the Pluto train and a 2024 start-up. The project would include domestic gas infrastructure.

Using the the second Pluto train is the company’s preferred concept for developing Scarborough, which has an estimated gas resource of 7.3 trillion cubic feet. Woodside owns 75 per cent of Scarborough.

Managing director Peter Coleman said entering the FEED stage for the Pluto project was a significant step towards the developing Burrup Hub as a regional LNG production centre.

"Our Burrup Hub vision is taking shape as we work with Bechtel to progress the Pluto Train 2 project, which will create a pathway for the globally cost-competitive development of Western Australian gas resources," Mr Coleman said.
