ENI begins SAF production at existing refinery in Italy
ENI SPA recently announced that it has begun production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at its long running 110,000 barrel per day Taranto refinery in Italy. The company is planning to increase its bio refining capacity at certain existing complexes as part of a four-year plan to reach 1.1 MMtpy of biofuel capacity.
ENI did not announce the new SAF production capacity, but the product has already been made available for airline purchases. The Taranto refinery is producing this fuel with a component of used cooking oil as the company intends to phase out palm oil as a renewable feedstock by 2023. This new production at Taranto is part of the company’s overall SAF expansion plan that includes plans at its Livorno and Gela refineries, which would lower emissions and bolster production at struggling refineries in Europe.
