Formosa Plastics USA plans $332M expansion of PVC plant in Baton Rouge
Formosa Plastics USA is investing $332 million for a 20% production expansion of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin by 300 million lbs/year at the company’s industrial manufacturing site in Baton Rouge on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The site, which has been in operation since the 1980s, already has three operating PVC units. Formosa will retain 230 existing workers and add 16 direct jobs.
Formosa Plastics had considered its Texas plant for the expansion, but chose their Louisiane site. According to Louisiana Economic Development (LED) the expansion project is slated to create 500 construction jobs beginning in early 2020. Launch of the new operations is scheduled for late 2021 or early 2022. To secure the project, LED offered Formosa a competitive incentive package that includes a performance-based grant of up to $500,000, plus access to the Louisiana’s Quality Jobs and Industrial Tax Exemption programs
“Louisiana is one of only a few areas uniquely qualified with the resources and infrastructure to support our industry, allowing us to diversify our production across our locations, further adding to the reliability of supply for our customers,” said Paul Heurtevant, plant manager of Formosa Plastics in Baton Rouge.
The U.S. subsidiary of the Taiwanese plastic maker also plans to add production equipment for two other units inside the facility for its halogenated acid production unit for internal use in the production of vinyl chloride monomer.
