Indonesian Petchem groundbreaking for 1.7 MMtpy methanol plant in Sarawak
During the ground breaking ceremony held in Tanjung Kidurong near Bintulu, the Chief Minister for Sawarak expressed desire for state-owned Petchem Sdn Bhd to further develop downstream processing in-country, based on abundant oil and gas reserves. Sarawak has the largest reserves in Indonesia, estimated at 54% for gas and 29% for remaing oil reserves.
Currently much value-added activity is done abroad using Indonesian natural gas as feedstock. Chief Minister Datuk Abang Johari Openg wants to invite petrochemical industries to set up plants in Sarawak, making Bintulu not only an LNG hub but also another integrated petrochemical hub.
The Tanjung Kidurong 1.7 MMtpy methanol and derivative plant will receive 160 MMscd natural gas feedstock from Petronas. The RM8.4 billion plant is expected to begin production in 2023.
