Methanol Plant in Washington Ceases Development
Northwest Innovation Works of Washington (NWIW) recently announced that it was temporizing any further development of the company’s proposed methanol plant in Kalama, Washington. The project is “effectively ended” according to the Port of Kalama, as NWIW intends to terminate its lease in the area.
The $2.3 billion NWIW Kalama methanol project had been in development since 2014, and the company added that Washington’s “regulatory environment has become unclear and unpredictable.” This includes a rejection this past January from Washington’s Department of Ecology over a shoreline permit that the plant had needed to proceed. The methanol produced at this location would primarily have been intended as feedstock for the plastic industry in China.
