Mitsubishi Chemical proposes Methyl Methacrylate Plant in Louisiana.
Mitsubishi Chemical of Japan announced that it has acquired 67 acres of land in Geismar, Louisiana near the Mississippi River for a potential Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) plant. The company plans to begin feasibility studies next for this project.
This MMA complex is being envisioned as a 35,000 tons per year facility with a final investment decision expected in 2022 with a startup of operations anticipated in 2025. Reports indicate that this is a $1 billion dollar project in design. MMA is a core piece in the creation of polymers for commercial products such as paints and adhesives.
If this project does progress, it would be a welcome anomaly in the current pandemic driven recession that has caused so many projects under planning to be placed on hold. This project began its early conception in 2016 to take advantage of the plentiful and cheap natural gas feedstock in the United States.
