Nigeria's Waltersmith modular refinery moves closer to startup.

According to Nigeria's Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), phase one of the anticipated Waltersmith modular refinery is reportedly imminent, as pre-commissioning has been completed. This facility is in Nigeria’s Ibigwe, Ohayi/Egbema Imo State, and is slated to begin by the end of the year with a capacity for 5,000 barrels per day.

The modular refinery design, which is done by assembling skid mounted structures for a more manageable construction effort, has been popular in Nigeria as the country’s large state-owned refineries have struggled for years with inefficiency and maintenance issues. Success with Waltersmith and its subsequent phases in addition to other modular refineries such as the 650,000 bpd Dangote refinery over the next couple of years are part of DPR’s hope for Nigeria to become a net exporter of petroleum projects.

Once Phase One of the Waltersmith refinery has been completed, the next phase to be constructed is for an additional plant with a 25,000 barrel per day capacity and a possible condensate refinery at the Waltersmith facilities.
