Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery Progresses with the Delivery of the Largest Crude Distillation Column
The Dangote Oil Refinery company has taken delivery of what the company calls the largest single crude distillation equipment package, for its 12-billion dollar refinery currently under construction.
This crude distillation column has a reported weight of 2,250 tons and will be key for this refinery’s capacity design of 650,000 barrels per day. This column was manufactured in China by Sinopec and will be the primary processor of crude oil feedstock into fuels such as Euro V quality gasoline and diesel, as well as jet fuel and polypropylene.
The Dangote refinery is designed to turn Nigeria from its current status as a net importer of petroleum products into a net exporter, as this refinery’s significant capacity of 650,000 barrels per day is higher than Nigeria’s total demand. Other refineries in Nigeria have struggled in recent years due to lack of maintenance, so this project’s lofty designs and its strategic location for export make it a key project for the country.
The delivery of this significant piece is expected to bring the previously delayed project closer to completion, as Dangote Executive Director Devakumar Edwin has previously stated that ““Ninety-five percent of engineering has been completed, 90 percent of procurement has been completed.” Construction Boxscore is maintaining a conservative start date of 2022 for this project for now.
