NNPC to Advance Kaduna and Warri Rehab Refineries in July

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) announced in late June that it plans to award EPC contracts by the end of July for a pair of state-owned Nigerian Refineries.  The company has been planning a much-needed rehabilitation project for the 10,000 barrel per day Kaduna and the 125,000 barrel per day Warri refineries, as they have fallen into inefficient operation over the years.

This plan to have EPC contracts in place follows the approval of a $1.5 billion rehab plan for the 210,000 barrel per day Port Harcourt refinery from earlier in 2021, which was achieved through bank loans rather than federal money sources. This rehabilitation plan, along with NNPC’s initiative to secure a 20% stake in the upcoming massive 650,000 barrel per day Dangote refinery due in 2022, is of paramount interest for NNPC, as Managing Director Mele Kyari recently that "As the national oil company of the country we have the responsibility to guarantee energy security."  No further details regarding the upcoming EPC contracts were available at press time.
