Pertamina explores the relocation of its $10 billion grass roots refinery
Indonesia’s state energy company PT Pertamina is making possible plans to relocate its Bontang Grass Roots refinery in East Kalimantan with the recent news of Overseas Oil and Gas (OOG) of Oman leaving the project. OOG first joined the project in 2018, but as of this month this partnership was ended without specific reasons given.
Pertamina is moving ahead with the 300,000 bpd project as it hopes to sign on with a new partner in the project. Pertamina's Investment Planning and Risk Management Director Heru Setiawan recently said that the company is considering alternate locations, such Kaula Tanjung and Arun on Sumatra Island. Mr. Setiawan added that the Sumatra location was of interest due to its access to the international market, as well as the Sumatran market.
The Bontang Grass Roots refinery is currently expected to start commercial operations in 2025, but with a search for another partner and a new location to be decided upon plus the potential delays from the current pandemic, this date could change.
