Phillips 66 is planning to turn one of its California refineries into the world’s largest renewable fuels complex
Phillips 66 announced late last week that it will be shutting in the traditional oil production at its long running Rodeo refinery in San Francisco, California to convert it into the largest renewable fuel plant in the world. This announcement follows similar renewable conversion plans in recent days for Marathon’s Martinez refinery and HollyFrontier’s Cheyenne refinery as companies turn their attention to biofuel as a growing option.
This new direction is called the Phillips 66 Rodeo Renewed project and will produce 680 million gallons per year of renewable diesel, renewable gasoline and sustainable jet fuel from a feedstock comprised of used cooking oil, fats, greases, and soybean oils. When combined with an unspecified 120 million gallon per year hydrotreater conversion using soybean oil feedstock in development from Phillips 66, this plant will produce over 800 million gallons annually, thus making it the largest facility of its kind in the world.
Cost estimates for the Rodeo Renewed project are reportedly between $750 to 800 million with production expected to begin in early 2024.
