Second Azerbaijan urea and ammonia plant to be built in Sumqayit
Tuskish company Tekfen and the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) have signed a memorandum on the construction of a new urea plant in Azerbaijan. It will be built in Sumqayit and have a production capacity of 2,000 tonnes of urea a day and 1,200 tonnes of ammonia.
SOCAR Carbamide Plant head Khayal Jafarov told journalists that construction of a second carbamide (urea) plant to cost 20-25% less than the first one. The cost could presumably come to about 640-650 million euros. Since there way no way to expand capacity of the existingplant through renovation, it was decided to build the second plant which will be an exact copy of the first. The cost of the new project will be clearer after engineering work is completed.
Money will be saved due to the project's tax-exempt status and the fact that the two plants will have the same managament, be located adjacent, share infrastructure for receiving natural gas, process water, an administrative building, a laboratory, and warehouses for reagents and spare parts.
