Shell begins to shut down its Convent Refinery in Louisiana.

Royal Dutch Shell recently announced that it is indeed shutting down its 240,000 barrel per day Convent refinery in St. James Parish, Louisiana. This process has reportedly already begun and could be completed by mid-December.

Shell had been trying to sell the refinery since July, after it had become an unprofitable venture due to the coronavirus driven impact on lower demand since March. The decision was made to shutter the facility in completely in early November and began this procedure on November 29th with the facility’s 12,000 barrel per day isomerization unit shutting off. The remaining units will be shut down throughout, likely ending by December 13th.

This closure is the lately in what has become a series of permanent shutdowns around the world, which could result in a loss of 1.7 million barrels per day by the end of next year. The Construction Boxscore Database analyst team will continue to monitor these actions.
