Shuttered St. Croix Refinery Seeks New Owners for Potential Restart
Limetree Bay Energy announced that it would indefinitely shut in its 210,000 barrel per day last June, but this facility could return in some capacity under new ownership. Limetree Bay is hoping to sell the refinery and its assets by the end of October.
This refinery was restarted back in February after many years of inactivity but was once again shut in this past May due to serious issues with local air pollution that impacted local residents and contamination of the water supply. Restart efforts were unsuccessful, and the facility is expected to lay off all workers by mid-September.
New ownership could purchase this project for some sort of restart of either fossil fuel or potentially renewable production, but the damage done locally is likely to hinder a return unless local sentiment regarding public safety can be won over and reassured.
