Sibur Tobolsk starts constructing maleic anhydride facility, slated for 2021 startup
Sibur has commenced construction of a maleic anhydride (MAN) production unit at its Sibur Tobolsk facility, a company spokesman in Tobolsk reported.
The production unit will have capacity to produce 45,000 tonnes a year. It is scheduled to enter service in 2021.
The MAN production is licensed by Italian engineering company Conser. The project documents were prepared by the NIPIGAZ institute, which is co-owned by Sibur and several of its shareholders.
MAN is not currently produced in Russia. The Russian market consumes 4,500 tonnes a year, all of which is imported. Sibur expects to fully substitute for those imports and also export MAN to markets in Western and Eastern Europe and to Turkey.
MAN is used in the construction, agriculture, automotive, paint and varnish, furniture, pharmaceutical and other industries. It serves as feedstock for films, synthetic fibers, pharmaceuticals, detergents, fuel components and oils. MAN is used to strengthen material and increase its re-sistance to moisture, extreme temperature and mechanical stress.
