SK Energy readies new vacuum residue desulfurization facility in Ulsan
SK Energy has announced that its 40,000-bpd Vacuum Residue Desulfurization (VRDS) facility in the South Gyeongsang Province in Ulsan is near completion and is slightly ahead of schedule for full production in March. SK Engineers are pushing to complete this unit in order to boost low emission fuel sales in the face of the New International Maritime Organization (IMO) marine fuel standards coming into effect next month.
The IMO 2020 regulations on January 1, 2020 will prohibit ships from using fuels with over 0.5% sulphur, compared with 3.5% now, unless they are equipped with exhaust-cleaning “scrubbers”. Once completed next month, this VRDS facility from SK Energy will be the company’s first plant solely designed to produce low sulphur fuel oil. SK Energy’s investment of approximately 898 million in this VRDS facility is its largest in over a decade.
