Total, Saudi Aramco remain interested in SATORP petrochemicals expansion
Francei-based Total and state-run oil company Saudi Aramco remain interest in expanding
petrochemicalsproduction at their SATORP
refining JV in Saudi Arabia, a senior Total executive told news agency
Reuters.
Jean-Jacques Mosconi, senior vice president at Total for
refining and
petrochemicals int he Middle East and Asia, told
Reuters that the
expansion would be large and involve capacity increases for linear-alpha olefins, poly-alpha olefins and elastomers.
However, the companies need to solve the issue of obtaining gas
feedstock supplies before conducting detailed studies of the
project, he said. The companies have been considering the project for several years.
"Total and Aramco remain interested in this
project, but to launch it we need gas allocations, and we are working on that," Mosconi told
Reuters.
Saudi Arabia is currently investing billions of dollars to locate and develop new gas supplies, which could be used to develop further
petrochemical projects.
SATORP, located in Jubail, includes a 400,000-bpd
refinery and
petrochemicals units with a combined total of 1 MMtpy.
