Total ceases onsite work at its developing Mozambique LNG project.
Onsite work at the $20 billion dollar onshore Mozambique LNG has been temporarily ceased due to an outbreak of the coronavirus. At the beginning of the month, the first case involving Mozambique LNG personnel was discovered. According to Mozambique’s national health institute, approximately 18 of the country’s 34 confirmed Covid-19 cases have been identified as being tied to this project.
Project leader Total stated recently that “To minimize the risk of further transmission, the company and its contractors have implemented strict protocols and have progressively moved to temporarily reduce the number of personnel at the project site.” This implementation has not officially delayed the project as yet but could affect its timeline depending on the downtime necessary. Mozambique LNG is currently expected to commence startup in 2024 with a stated capacity of 12.88 MMtpy.
This virus outbreak is another setback for the region, which has already been facing an increase in Islamic State insurgent attacks recently. With this outbreak, lower demand, and geopolitical tensions all factoring in, delays have been commonplace such as the recently delayed FID for the nearby ExxonMobil-led Rovuma LNG project.
