TOYO awarded acrylic acid project in Indonesia
Toyo Engineering Corp has been awarded a contract for an acrylic acid (AA) production plant with capacity of 100,000 tpy in Cilegon, Banten, on the western tip of Java, Indonesia from PT. Nippon Shokubai Co. Toyo is responsible for a portion of the engineering and offshore supply services. A consortium of PT. Inti Karya Persada Tehnik (IKPT), TOYO’s Indonesian subsidiary, and PT. SMCC Utama Indonesia (SMCC), Indonesian subsidiary of Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co., Ltd. is responsible for engineering, domestic procurement and construction work.
AA, one of Nippon Shokubai’s core businesses, shows steady growth of demand as a key material of superabsorbent polymer (“SAP”) and acrylate (“AES”) etc. In recent years, the demand and supply balance of AA is highly tight especially in Asia. To accommodate the demand and fulfill its duty to supply products, Nippon Shokubai has studied further expansion of AA. As a result of the study, Nippon Shokubai concluded to expand the capacity of NSI, taking into consideration NSI’s location in Asia and the expectation for synergistic effect with the existing plant.
The plant is scheduled for mechanical completion in March 2021, with commercial operation in November 2021. Current capacity is 140,000 tpy, growing to total 240,000 tpy after completion.
Starting from the award of an SAP plant project in China in 2003, TOYO has accumulated project experience in Asia, Europe and United States of America for NSCL. TOYO has also been awarded Acrylic Acid and SAP plant project from NSI in Indonesia on 2011.
The client has appreciated TOYO’s long-term relationship with NSCL and TOYO/IKPT’s project execution capability backed up by abundant project experience in Indonesia, which led to this award.
