			Velocys to Supply Fischer-Tropsch Tech for Ohio GTL Plant
		
		Microchannel Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactor technology developed by Velocys has been selected for use in a 2,800 barrel per day (bpd) gas-to-liquids (GTL) plant being developed by Pinto Energy, LLC (Pinto). The smaller scale GTL plant, located at an 80-acre industrial site owned by Pinto in the Port of Ashtabula, Ohio, USA will be used to convert abundant low-cost natural gas from the Utica and Marcellus shale region into high value specialty products, such as solvents, lubricants and waxes, as well as ultra clean transportation fuels.
The opening up of shale gas plays is one of the most important trends in North American oil and gas markets, but with gas prices remaining low the economics of some resources are marginal. Smaller scale GTL plants located near gas sources and product markets show great promise for deriving value from these smaller or undervalued accumulations of natural gas.
Work on the Ashtabula plant design in collaboration with Ventech Engineers International LLC began in April 2013 and is due to be completed at the end of 2013. A final notice to proceed on fabrication of the modular process units is anticipated in the first half of 2014. Installation is expected to be completed in late 2015, with plant start-up due to take place in early 2016.
The project will form the first phase of a planned multi-train facility at Ashtabula. Substantial infrastructure is already present on the site, including waste water treatment plants, an air separation unit, a gas pipeline and product loading facilities for both barge and rail. Customers for some of the plant's products are located nearby.
Pinto has a portfolio of other sites where it intends to develop smaller scale GTL projects using Velocys' microchannel FT technology.
